In 1974, Bülent Ortaçgil published his masterpiece. It is — in my albeit humble opinion — one of the great works of Turkish music in existence. The album’s title is Benimle Oynar Mısın (Will you play with me). In an interview with the Turkish daily Hürriyet, Ortaçgil explained the foundation of the album. “‘Benimle Oynar Mısın?’ teknikle değil, tamamen ruhla yapılmış bir albüm,” he said.1 (Translation: “Benimle Onar Mısın’ is without technique, it is an album completely made with spirit.”)
I’d go a step further and argue that the technique here is so masterful that it merely gives the appearance of throwing out technique. Intimate guitar/piano melodies paired with Ortaçgil’s voice give the illusion of a daydream, a perfect memory for stories to be told through. Do yourself a favor and listen to this ASAP.
